When ISEC was selected to manage the security contract for Cirque du Soleil’s national Kooza tour, Simone Elbeb, our General Manager of Events, was tasked with planning security logistics across Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. It was a perfect opportunity to model best-practice work and HR methodologies. “Cirque du Soleil is about dazzling its audience and creating a ‘wow’ factor,” says Simone. “The patronage is very different from a higher-risk event, such as a music festival where you can have 30,000 people in attendance. It’s ticketed, fully seated and more family oriented. Our job isn’t just to ensure high-level security services, it is also to supply guards with excellent communication and customer service skills. ISEC hand-picks its people to ensure we contribute to a positive experience for the event patrons as well as the client.”

With 20 years in the security industry, Simone is passionate about ensuring clients receive the best quality service available. “In an industry where staff turnover is high, ours is really low. To get the best out of our team, it’s important that we remunerate them properly, speak to them with respect, train them well and roster them in positions that suit their capabilities.

Large-scale events like the Cirque du Soleil tour have many moving parts. They demand both efficient guards on the ground and a strong Management presence. “Each location requires static guarding, crowd control and customer service for around three months, including the marking period, bump in, event period, and bump out. The Cirque shows operate five or six days a week so their security needs are constant and changing daily. To ensure the events needs are covered at all times, we put together a core group of travelling guards and instated a dedicated Travelling Manager. It’s not a service that every security company offers but our client really benefits from having a team on the ground who are completely familiar with their responsibilities and can provide consistency of service. The Travelling Manager is also a conduit who can speak directly to the Cirque du Soleil Touring Manager and to me. If there’s a problem, he can call me 24/7 and I can find a resolution. We don’t leave anything to chance. We’re very proud to be associated with this international brand. It’s been a real pleasure to work with them.
